The tiny St. Petersburg neighborhood of Driftwood is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Pinellas County. The waterfront community has a distinct bohemian “Old Florida” feel.
The close-knit and exclusive community has a rich history. During the Prohibition period in the 1920s and early 1930s, it was notorious for being an outpost for bootleggers. It is also said the infamous gangster and businessman, Al Capone aka “Scarface” had homes in St. Petersburg and Driftwood saw a lot of action during that time.
In its early days, Driftwood was one of the first sites for Pinellas County’s schools, stores and post offices and was the only place in the county to have seen armed conflict during the Civil War. In the early 1900s, it was also a hub for shipbuilding.
The stunning architecture of the neighborhood gives it an “Old Florida” feel. Many of the homes were built in the 1920s when Driftwood real estate experienced a boom.
Homes for sale in Driftwood are quite rare since most houses are passed down generation to generation or only sold by word of mouth. So, when someone does put up a for-sale sign, the building is sold in an instant.
Driftwood also offers some of the best museums and art galleries in Pinellas County, including the Mahaffey Theater, the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art and the Florida Holocaust Museum.
